It’s simple for kids!

Let’s get the kids in the kitchen to join in our simple celebrations.  We have a new category on our home page called, “Simple for Kids”.  We will tag some old recipes that are kid-friendly and will post new ones from time to time.  This recipe is an easy start to cooking together with your children or grandchildren.  And … what a delicious start it is!

Cinnamon Sugar Rolls

Course Kids Dessert
Cuisine American
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 1 puff pastry sheet thawed
  • 4 Tbsp butter divided
  • 1 ½ Tbsp cinnamon
  • 6 Tbsp sugar
  • 1 Tbsp cream cheese softened
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/8 tsp vanilla

Instructions

Pastry & Filling

  • Preheat oven to 400°.
  • Roll out pastry into a square and enlarge
  • Melt 2 Tbsp butter and spread over the top of the pastry.
  • Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar over the butter.
  • Roll up pastry and cut into 8 rolls.
  • Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet several inches apart. Bake for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.

Icing

  • Soften the remaining butter and add cream cheese, powdered sugar and vanilla in a mixing bowl.
  • Mix until smooth and ice the rolls while hot.

Notes

This recipe is perfect for using up scraps of puff pastry you have leftover from another recipe.

Apricot and Fresh Cherry Crumble

Ingredients

  • 6-8 ripe apricots halved & pitted
  • 2-3 cups cherries pitted
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 3/4 vanilla bean split
  • TOPPING
  • 2 Tbsp brown sugar
  • kosher salt
  • 4 graham crackers crushed
  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter cold and cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup unsalted roasted almonds roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°.          
  • Place apricots, cherries, 2 Tbsp brown sugar, corn starch, cinnamon, and vanilla bean seeds (from split bean), in a large bowl. Toss.
  • Place in an oven proof dish so that apricots are in a single layer.

Topping

  • In a small bowl, place brown sugar, dash of kosher salt, graham crackers, and butter. Work with your fingers to make a small pebble like mixture.
  • Add almonds and stir.
  • Place on top of fruit and bake for 35 minutes.
  • Serve when it has slightly cooled or at room temperature.

Notes

Vanilla ice cream is the perfect partner for this dish!

Put cinnamon and apple together and you have the wonderfully warm flavors of fall.  Add some rum, and it’s a party!  This cocktail seriously tastes exactly like apple pie.  We believe the cinnamon schnapps is the key ingredient that makes it fabulous.  Make this your “signature” drink at your next fall gathering, everyone is guaranteed to love it!

Apple Pie Cocktail

Ingredients

  • 1/4 gallon apple cider
  • 1/2 cup dark rum
  • 1/2 cup cinnamon schnapps
  • cinnamon sugar to rim the glasses optional
  • 1 Granny Smith apple peeled, cut into large chunks and skewered

Instructions

  • Mix together cider, rum and schnapps in a large pitcher.    
  • Rim glasses with cinnamon sugar.
  • Pour the spiked cider into glasses filled with ice, then garnish with an apple skewer and serve.

Notes

As an option, you can rim the glasses with cinnamon sugar for added flavor.

This recipe is made the evening before you want to serve it.  You can add different nuts or raisins and make it your own speciality!

Make Ahead Pull-Apart Cinnamon Rolls

Equipment

  • Bundt pan

Ingredients

  • 1 package Bridgeford frozen Parkerhouse rolls
  • 1 package butterscotch pudding instant or regular
  • 1 stick butter melted
  • 1 to 2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans raisins, etc (optional)

Instructions

  • Start this dish the night before.  Grease a bundt pan.
  • Put 1/2 the frozen rolls in the pan.  
  • Sprinkle 1/2 the pudding over the rolls.  If adding nuts or raisins, also add half.  
  • Repeat layer.
  •  Mix together the melted butter, cinnamon and brown sugar.  Pour over the contents of the pan.
  • Put bundt pan on a cookie sheet and store overnight on countertop.  This dish will rise overnight.
  • The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°.  Bake for 30 minutes. You may need to push dough that has risen above the pan back into the pan.
  • Turn onto a pretty serving dish and serve warm.  

Notes

This is also good served room temperature or microwave for 20 seconds to heat it up.

Warm Cinnamon Apples with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp unsalted butter
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples thinly sliced
  • Vanilla bean ice cream

Instructions

  • Melt butter in a small frying pan.  
  • Add cinnamon, brown sugar and allspice and stir for a couple of minutes.
  •  Add apples and sauté until soft.  
  • Serve over vanilla bean ice cream.

Notes

For added texture and flavor, top with dried cranberries or chopped walnuts.
